Indian Pharmacopoeia 2014: A Comprehensive Guide to Drug Standards

The Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) is a legal document that prescribes the standards for drugs produced and/or marketed in India. It is published by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The IP aims to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines and to promote public health in India and other countries using drugs manufactured in India.

The seventh edition of the IP (IP 2014) was released on 4th November, 2013 by the Honâble Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad. It consists of four volumes and contains 2548 monographs of drugs, including 577 new monographs of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, dosage forms, antibiotics, insulin products and herbal products. The IP 2014 also covers products of biotechnology, indigenous herbs and herbal products, veterinary vaccines and additional antiretroviral drugs and formulations, inclusive of commonly used fixed-dose combinations.

The IP 2014 has been revised and updated by introducing advanced technology and experimental methods widely adopted in India and abroad. It also incorporates the latest guidelines and requirements of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Rules thereunder, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizations. The IP 2014 also includes 19 new radiopharmaceutical monographs and one general chapter for the first time.

The IP 2014 is an authoritative and legally enforceable document that helps in the inspection and licensing of manufacturing units and distribution of drugs and pharmaceuticals. It also serves as a reference book for academicians, researchers, regulators, health professionals and students. The IP 2014 is available in print and electronic formats. The electronic version can be downloaded from the IPC website
