Indian Pharmacopoeia 2014: A Comprehensive Guide to Drug Standards
The Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) is a legal document that prescribes the standards for drugs produced and/or marketed in India. It is published by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The IP aims to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines and to promote public health in India and other countries using drugs manufactured in India.

The seventh edition of the IP (IP 2014) was released on 4th November, 2013 by the Honâble Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad. It consists of four volumes and contains 2548 monographs of drugs, including 577 new monographs of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, dosage forms, antibiotics, insulin products and herbal products. The IP 2014 also covers products of biotechnology, indigenous herbs and herbal products, veterinary vaccines and additional antiretroviral drugs and formulations, inclusive of commonly used fixed-dose combinations.
The IP 2014 has been revised and updated by introducing advanced technology and experimental methods widely adopted in India and abroad. It also incorporates the latest guidelines and requirements of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Rules thereunder, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizations. The IP 2014 also includes 19 new radiopharmaceutical monographs and one general chapter for the first time.
The IP 2014 is an authoritative and legally enforceable document that helps in the inspection and licensing of manufacturing units and distribution of drugs and pharmaceuticals. It also serves as a reference book for academicians, researchers, regulators, health professionals and students. The IP 2014 is available in print and electronic formats. Indian Pharmacopoeia 2014 Volume 1: General Notices and Monographs
The first volume of the IP 2014 contains the general notices, preface, introduction, acknowledgements and the monographs of drugs arranged in an alphabetical order. The general notices provide the necessary information and guidance for using the IP 2014. They include the definitions, abbreviations, symbols, units, expressions of strength, methods of analysis, reference substances, interpretation of requirements and other general principles applicable to all the monographs and texts of the IP 2014.
The monographs of drugs consist of three main parts: title, definition and requirements. The title indicates the official name of the drug or preparation. The definition describes the nature and essential characteristics of the drug or preparation. The requirements specify the standards for identity, purity and content of the drug or preparation. The requirements are followed by tests, procedures and acceptance criteria for determining compliance with the standards.
The monographs of drugs in volume 1 cover a wide range of substances, such as APIs, excipients, dosage forms, antibiotics, insulin products and herbal products. Some examples of the new monographs added in volume 1 are Abacavir Sulphate Tablets, Acarbose Tablets, Adapalene Gel, Alendronate Sodium Tablets, Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets, Aripiprazole Tablets, Atorvastatin Calcium Tablets, Azithromycin Oral Suspension, Budesonide Inhalation Powder Capsules, Candesartan Cilexetil Tablets, Cefixime Oral Suspension, Cetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets, Chlorhexidine Gluconate Mouthwash Solution, Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Eye Drops Solution, Clopidogrel Bisulphate Tablets, Diclofenac Sodium Gel, Efavirenz Capsules, Enoxaparin Sodium Injection Solution, Escitalopram Oxalate Tablets, Esomeprazole Magnesium Capsules etc.
