The Lightning II was selected in September 2012 as the winner of the U.S. Air Force's bid to replace its aging fleet of legendary F-16 fighters and to become the preferred jet for the U.S. Air Force. The F-35 has amassed more than 12,000 flying hours in 9,000 mishaps -- accidents and incidents that could have resulted in a combat loss. F-35 mishap rates, measured in flying hours, are far below those of legacy fighters, such as the F-16.
